SUMMARY:International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development cl
 osing ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Element initiative by The Club of Rome has participat
 ed in the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development
  (IYBSSD) over the past year. IYBSSD will hold a closing ceremony to celeb
 rate the year's achievements in changing the view of society about the cru
 cial role of basic sciences in the progress toward the United Nations Sust
 ainable Development Goals and mobilising scientists in the area of basic r
 esearch to discuss how they contribute to sustainable development.\n\nEarl
 y-career scientists and their contributions to developing science and its 
 interactions with society at large will be the focal point of the morning 
 sessions. Every science student and early-career scientist is invited to a
 ttend and take part in the discussion. Representatives of science academie
 s from Africa\, Asia\, South America\, and Europe will discuss the over 40
 0 events organized in more than 70 countries\, by the 53 partner organisat
 ions (international scientific unions\, research organisations and funding
  agencies) and 123 supporters (national\, regional\, and international sci
 ence academies\, scientific networks\, universities\, etc.).\n\nThe procla
 mation of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development
  (2024-2033)\, by the United Nations General Assembly\, is the most import
 ant outcome of IYBSSD. It will be discussed by Csaba Kőrösi\, former Pre
 sident of the UN General Assembly\, Jelena Begović\, Minister of Science\
 , Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia\, Lid
 ia Brito\, Assistant Director General of UNESCO\, Vanessa McBride\, Scienc
 e Director of the International Science Council and Carlos Alvarez-Pereira
